Sealants
Sealants are clear, akrylic-like material that bonds with the tooth to help stop decay-causing bacteria from invading the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. They can be applied by your dentist or your hygenist. Sealants are a safe, painless way to help protect the patient's teeth. Sealants can only be applied if teeth are free of decay, therefore children are better candidates for this treatment than adults.
Frequently Asked Questions about Sealants
When should my child get sealants?
Sealants should be applied as soon as the first permanent molars come in, (usually are 5-7 years of age). Then as soon as the second moalars and premolars come in they should be sealed as well, (usually around age 11-14). Getting the sealants done right away is very importanat as the greatest chance of decay is during the first year after the teeth come in. However, if the teeth are free of decay and have no filings, then sealants can be applied at any time.
